Outdoor Dialysis is a brand of chilaquiles ltd. We design and sell adaptive apparel for people receiving dialysis, chemotherapy and other infused treatment.
Why does this exist?
Treatment is scheduled around access. A hemodialysis session needs a bare forearm for four hours. An infusion needs a port or a line reachable for as long as the drip runs. The clothing answer most people end up with is to take the top off, push a sleeve up past a fistula, or wear something they would not otherwise choose to wear, in a room that is usually cold, for a long time, in front of other people.
That is a clothing problem, not a medical one, and it can be solved with a zipper in the right place. Outdoor Dialysis started with one idea: run the zipper the whole length of the arm, so the garment opens exactly where the treatment is, and stays closed everywhere else.
What is different about the design?
Most adaptive garments put a short opening where the designer assumed the access would be. Access points are not standardized, and they move. A fistula matures. A graft is placed on the other arm. A port is added. Cannulation sites are rotated on purpose.
So the zippers run further than they need to. On the crewnecks and the pullover hoodie, one continuous zipper runs from one wrist, across the chest, to the other wrist, with four pulls that can hold two openings at once. On the hoodies and the wearable blanket, a zipper runs from the cuff to the upper chest on each sleeve. One garment covers a left-arm access, a right-arm access, and a chest port, and it still covers them when things change.
The wrist-to-chest design used on the cotton full-zip hoodie and the sherpa fleece hoodie is patented. The wrist-to-wrist design is patent pending, with design and utility applications on file with the USPTO.
Who makes the garments?
They are produced by our manufacturing partner to our specification and grading. We are not a print-on-demand shop and these are not blanks with a logo added. The zipper construction is the product.
